Health Insurance Requirement for J-1 & J-2 Exchange Visitors

All J-1 students and scholars and their accompanying J-2 dependents are required by the immigration regulations to maintain certain minimum levels of health insurance coverage for the duration of their program dates as noted on their DS-2019 immigration form.  OIS requires documentation of coverage in an acceptable insurance plan in order to process requests such as program extensions, travel signatures, and other immigration benefits.  In addition, students and scholars whose insurance is provided through NC State but does not kick in until the start of the following month after their arrival due to enrollment policies and procedures must purchase short term coverage to cover themselves and any accompanying dependents before the university insurance begins.  For information on specific coverage requirements, please visit OIS’s page on insurance at http://internationalservices.ncsu.edu/health-insurance-j1/
