Global Graduate: Vanessa Maia Gomes

Vanessa Maia Gomes, Master of International Studies

Tell us about yourself.

I’m Vanessa and I’m from Brazil. I came to the US in 2017 for an exchange program and decided to pursue a master’s degree. I was already living in Raleigh and a lot of people told me NC State could be a good choice for me. I applied thinking I wouldn’t get accepted but here I am graduating in May. I love learning about other cultures, learn other languages, and meeting people with diverse backgrounds. I love baking, running, summer is my favorite season, dark chocolate is my favorite candy, and I love reading books. My favorite TV show is Friends.

How was your experience at NC State University?

I had a great experience at NC State. Even though it was hard through the pandemic, I had the best resources available throughout my academic path here. Classes, workshops, career fairs, professional development, and engaging with groups on campus were a great experience. I always dreamed on studying abroad and I’m thankful that NC State provided me to achieve my personal goals. My favorite places on campus are definetely the Hill Library (I loved reading and lounging there) and Talley Student Union (buying stuff and enjoying some Howling Cow). I will be glad in being a NC State alummni and I hope I will be able to contribute to future international students.

What would you say is your biggest accomplishment during your time at NC State?

Studying full-time with limited financial resources. It was a hard path but really worth it.

What are your plans post graduation?

Looking for a job in the Triangle area.

Do you have any advice for current or incoming international students?

  • Ask questions: Do not be afraid or reluctant in asking questions (for a colleague, for a professor, for a staff member, etc).
  • Search: NC State has so many good resources to offer us that sometimes you don’t even know they exist. So, search for things. You’re investing a lot of money in your education, so don’t settle down when it comes to your education.
  • Be engaged: There are many associations and groups on campus that you can be part of and connect with other people.
  • English: Having English as a second language can be hard sometimes, but never be afraid to speak. You already passed the TOEFL exam, so you’re good to go.
