Setting up a bank account is an important step to getting settled in the United States. The Office of International Services strongly recommends that you do this as soon as possible following your arrival. There are numerous banks located within walking distance of the NC State campus and OIS maintains a list of these banks for your convenience.
To open a bank account, you will need your passport and I-20 (F-1 visas) or DS-2019 (J-1 visas). You may also need a social security number within 30-60 days of opening an account, but this will vary from bank to bank. However, you will not need a social security number to open an account.
