Global Graduate: Monica Rathod

Monica Rathod, Master of Science in Chemical Engineering

About Monica

My name is Monica Rathod. I am an International student graduating in Spring 2022 with a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and a Graduate Certificate in Downstream Biomanufacturing from Biomanufacturing and Training Education Center (BTEC) at NCSU. I am an extrovert who likes to get involved in as many extra-curricular activities as possible. I am currently an International Student Ambassador (India), College of Engineering department ambassador, President of MAITRI-Indian Graduate Student Association at NCSU, Secretary of Graduate Student Association (GSA) and serve on a few more committees along with working 20 hours part-time on-campus. I also like to dance, bake, cook and paint!

How was your experience at NC State?

My experience at NC State has been amazing (apart from the coursework stress). ChemE has four 700 level courses which takes up most of your time during the semester. The BTEC facility has been very supportive. The teaching and non-teaching staff, and even my batchmates have considered me as one of them and have celebrated my success and been there when I was at my lowest. The various activities and events organized by multiple committees like UAB, BSA etc. have kept me sane and I have enjoyed them thoroughly. I started my semester online in Fall 2020 because of the visa restrictions (COVID-19) and felt that I would not be able to merge with the students at NC State. But to my surprise, everyone here was so generous and welcoming. I did not feel like an outsider. I have enjoyed my time here.

What are your plans post graduation?

I’ll be working as a Manufacturing Associate II at ABZENA’s Sanford, NC facility.

What would you say is your biggest accomplishment from your time at NC State?

Since, I am an international student I thought it would be really difficult to reach any milestone. My biggest accomplishment would be being at the top positions in all the committees that I am a part of. Being 1000’s of miles away from family and doing everything on your own is a struggle. But I am proud of myself and cherish everything I have achieved so far.

Do you have any advice for current or incoming students?

Don’t just get so involved in completing your assignments and coursework that you forget to enjoy the college life. Attend as many events as possible and interact with people from different countries and having different cultures.
