What is Global Advantage?

In the ‘Think and Do’ spirit of NC State, we believe that internships and post graduation experience are critical components of a students’ education. Global Advantage is a career readiness program that helps international students find positions as internships or careers. This program provides workshops and resources to help students in the job search process.

What should I expect?

You will get an email when workshop dates/times/locations are finalized. If you can’t make it to the session, we will still share resources with all students who register!

Resume/Cover Letters – Friday, October 10th 2025

Time: 3-4pm – Slides will be shared with all registered students
Location: Zoom – link will be sent to all registered students

Join Ashton Poplaski from the Career Development Center to learn about how to prepare your resume and cover letter to be competitive in job applications. There will be time for a Q&A as well.

LinkedIn/Job Search – Monday, October 20th 2025

Time: 3-4pm – Slides will be shared with all registered students
Location: Zoom – link will be sent to all registered students

Join Lindsay McCallister from the Career Development Center to learn about how to find jobs and leverage tools such as LinkedIn in your job search. There will be time for a Q&A as well.

Leveraging your Strengths as an International Students – Friday, November 21st, 2025

Time: 4-5:30pm
Location: Zoom – link will be sent to all registered students

As an international student you have many strengths that you can leverage in the job search. This session will focus on practical ways to show those strengths in your job search and interviews. This is an interactive session that will allow participants a chance to practice these skills together.

OPT – Application and Reporting employment – Wednesday, January, 28 2026

Time: 4-5pm
Location: Zoom – Link will be sent to registered students

Thor Duryea from OIS will lead this presentation on the details surrounding Post-Completion OPT including eligibility, the application process, suggested timeline, and reporting requirements. Please come with your questions!

CPT – Application Process – Monday, February 2nd, 2026 (rescheduled to Feb 9)

Ray Espinol from OIS will lead this session to share about the eligibility and process of applying for Curricular Practical Training. This will be especially useful for students preparing for summer internships off campus. Please come with your questions!

Academic Training – Tuesday, February 24th, 2026

Time: 2-3pm
Location: Zoom – Link will be sent to registered students

Hillary Patton from OIS will lead this session to talk about eligibility and processes related to J-1 Academic Training. This will be especially useful for students who may benefit from internships and major-related work during and after their J-1 program. Please come with your questions!

Interview Preparation Workshop – Friday, February 27th, 2026

Time: 3-4pm
Location: Zoom – Link will be sent to registered students

This is a chance to practice answering interview questions that highlights the strengths that you have developed as an international student. In this session we will identify strengths, write and share answers to common questions, and give and receive feedback to improve our answers.

To prepare for this session, it is suggested to watch the video from the previous session where we introduced the STAR method and discussed specific strengths that employers are looking for. Also please have a look at the handout from that session.

STEM OPT – Monday, March 16, 2026

Time: 2:30 – 3:30pm
Location: Zoom – Link will be sent to registered students

OIS STEM expert Elizabeth Bender will lead this session to discuss the ins and outs of the OPT STEM extension, including eligilbity, timelines, and the application process. Please come with your questions!
