Sponsored Students

NC State University welcomes sponsored international students from over 30 countries and provides specialized support services to ensure a smooth transition to our campus community and a successful academic experience.

The Sponsored Student Program Manager, within the Office of International Services, serves as the central point of contact for all sponsored students and their sponsoring organizations. We support students through every stage of their journeys, from admissions and arrival through graduation.

Services Include:

  • Coordination of student billing and payments
  • Academic progress review and reporting
  • Enrollment verification
  • Facilitation of NC State Mandatory Health Insurance administrative waivers for eligible sponsored students
  • Campus navigation and success resources
  • Guidance on U.S. visa compliance
  •  One-on-one advising sessions
  • Specialized workshops on topics such as resume writing and job-search preparation; academic success strategies; and professional communication and interviewing skills
  • Ongoing communication between NC State and sponsors

Who Qualifies as a Sponsored Student?

International students are categorized as sponsored if they meet one of more of these criteria:

  • A third party sponsoring organization agrees to pay some or all of a student’s educational expenses (e.g., tuition, fees, health insurance, etc.) and the funding source is listed on the student’s I-20 or DS-2019. Common sponsors include government agencies, embassies, corporations or non-profit organizations. A sponsor is not typically a relative who is paying with personal funds.
  • A direct billing arrangement is in place between NC State and the sponsoring organization.
  • The sponsor requires NC State to provide formal documentation of student enrollment and progress directly to the sponsoring agency. Examples include verifications of enrollment, custom academic progress reports, transcripts, etc.
  • The sponsor has a written agreement with NC State that outlines the terms of enrollment, payment and support services.
  • The sponsoring agency provides U.S. health insurance coverage that meets the standards of the UNC system plan and seeks an administrative waiver for their students.

Examples of common sponsoring organizations: AMIDEAST, COLFUTURO, Fulbright, SABIC, Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM), The Royal Thai Embassy and The Sultanate of Oman Embassy.

NC State includes an administrative fee for sponsored student support services. The $375 fee is assessed for each Fall and Spring semester that a sponsored student is enrolled at NC State.  For students choosing to enroll in summer sessions, this fee will only be assessed once.
